MALOLOS

Cubao Bishop Honesto Flores Ongtioco has been appointed by Pope Francis as the apostolic administrator of the Diocese of Malolos, following the death of Bishop Jose Francisco Oliveros on Friday, May 11.

Papal Nuncio Archbishop Gabrielle Caccia, through his Charge d’ Affaires in Manila, Msgr. Arnaldo Catalan, communicated the decree to Malolos vicar-general Msgr. Pablo Legaspi Jr., giving Ongtioco the power to hold office as apostolic administrator of the Diocese of Malolos, including “all the faculties and rights to exercise the office of a diocesan bishop,” as per No. 244 of the Apostolorum Successores or Directory of Pastoral Ministry of Bishops.

Marc Cardinal Ouellet, Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops, issued the decree from Rome on May 12, a day after Oliveros’ death.

Born on Oct. 17, 1948, the 69-year old prelate was appointed the first bishop of Cubao on June 28, 2003 and was installed on Aug. 28, 2003, the same day the new diocese was canonically erected. Ongtioco was also appointed second bishop of Balanga, holding the position from 1998 to 2003.

Meanwhile, the late Oliveros is the fourth bishop of Malolos, and the first incumbent bishop of Malolos to pass away.

His interment will be on May 17 at the crypt of the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Malolos after a requiem Mass to be presided over by Archbishop Romulo Valles, CBCP President, at 9am.

The faithful are encouraged to pray for his eternal rest.
