SAN PABLO, Laguna

On the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the dedication of the St. James the Apostle Parish Church in this town, Fr. Francis Eugene A. Fadul, a devotee and a pilgrim of the “Camino de Santiago”, launched the book Apostol Santiago sa Mata ng Isang Peregrino on Saturday, July 14.

The book focuses on the life of St. James, apostle of Jesus Christ, son of Zebedee and brother of St. John. It includes the Filipino translation of the novena to St. James originally written in Spanish by Fr. Jose Fernandez Lago, member of the Cathedral chapter of Santiago de Compostela, Spain, as well as several prayers to the apostle.

Path for spiritual growth, conversion

It likewise narrates the development of Fadul’s devotion and his experiences and realizations in walking the “Camino de Santiago”. It also provides a historical overview of the “Camino de Santiago”.

Msgr. Francisco Perez, the Archbishop of Pamplona and Tudela, Spain, made the presentation of the book and Fr. Elisardo Temperan, Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Santiago de Compostela, wrote the introduction.

The “Camino de Santiago” or the Way of Saint James in English, is a network of pilgrimage routes leading to the shrine of the apostle Saint James the Great in the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia in north western Spain where, Christian tradition says, the remains of the apostle are buried.

Many devotees follow the “Camino de Santiago” as a form of spiritual path, or retreat, for their spiritual growth or ongoing conversion.

The parish church of Paete, Laguna, has a spiritual bond of affinity with the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Spain.
To mark the 300th anniversary of its dedication which took place on July 25, 1717, pilgrims who visit the grandiose church in Paete from July 25, 2017 to July 25, 2018 will be bestowed by the Apostolic Penitentiary with plenary indulgence.
