Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle of Manila reminded the faithful of the importance of rituals to be rooted from a “deeper reality” and not just “performance.”

The cardinal on Monday presided over a Mass at the Santísimo Rosario Parish in the University of Santo Tomas (UST) in preparation for this year’s Philippine Conference on New Evangelization (PCNE).

In his homily, he said that the people of faith cannot live life without rituals.

“We need these rituals, but as far as religious are concerned, there are supposed to be expressions of something deeper,” Tagle said.

The cardinal pointed out that PCNE is full of rituals and it should be rooted on Jesus.

“There are some portions, themes that are already ritualized and had become some sort of identity of PCNE and we need that. It should bring us back to life. Let the rituals express life and let the rituals equipped us, prepare us to face life,” said Tagle.

“For evangelization means nothing if we do not get rooted again and again in the person of the good news, Jesus. He is the Gospel in person,” he said.

But the cardinal emphasized that PCNE is about life and not just on rituals.

“PCNE is not just a ritual, it is not just a conference, it is about life, and it should be rooted in life and it should transform the realities, values, and the living of the Christian faith,” he added.

“[T]he point of PCNE, to provide a gripping experience of Jesus, a gripping experience of the community called the Church, and a gripping experience of mission, the calling, motivated only by love of Christ,” Tagle also said.

This year’s PCNE has a theme “Moved with Compassion, Feed the Multitude” that will take place on July 18-19 and 21-22 at UST Quadricentennial Pavillion and at the Cuneta Astrodome on July 20.
