As an initiative to address the spread of fake news, the Archdiocese of Jaro will hold the 2nd Archdiocesan Social Media Summit entitled #NoFilter on Sept. 29, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., at Ateneo de Iloilo-Sta. Maria Catholic School, Mandurriao in this city.
This year’s ASMS adapts the World Communications Day theme, “The truth will set you free” (Jn 8:32) Fake News and Journalism for Peace.
“The activity aims to address the concern on the proliferation of fake news and false through critical thinking and responsible use of social media. This will also provide social media users some skills to effectively use social media in evangelization,” shared Fr. Mark Lester Senina, Jaro Archdiocesan Youth Commission director.
Keynote speakers include veteran journalist Ryan Macasero, and Fr. Joselito Jopson, executive secretary of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines-Episcopal Commission on Social Communications and Mass Media (CBCP-ECSCMM), who will discuss fake news and the stand of the Catholic Church on the issue, as well as the role of responsible journalism in achieving peace.
Jaro Archbishop Jose Romeo O. Lazo encourages everyone, especially social media users and managers, to participate in the said activity, which is being spearheaded by the Jaro Archdiocesan Youth Commission, in coordination with the Archdiocesan Commission on Social Communications.
A video-making contest is also set to promote creative ways to promote truthful information and the responsible use of social media.
Registration and other details of the event are posted on its official event page.
