As present and future of the Church, the country’s young people must be bolstered by attention and programs in Basic Ecclesial Communities, a priest said.
Fr. Aldrin Lopez, Diocese of Novaliches BEC Caloocan District Coordinator, said that ministry to youth is an essential part of the missional focus of the church.
“Let’s focus our attention on the young people,” said Lopez during the second leg of the diocese’s BEC Big Day held at the Congress Elementary School in Caloocan City last Sept. 21.
Attended by around 2,000 people, this year’s diocesan BEC gathering was also in celebration of the Year of the Youth.
With the theme “Ang Kabataan sa Nagpapanibagong Simbahan,” the events held in the three districts of the diocese were in partnership with the diocese’s Commission on Youth.
In the Vatican II and the 2nd Plenary Council of the Philippines, the BEC is the direction and an expression of renewed Church, a new way of being Church.
Fr. Lopez stressed that authentic renewal in the Church should begin, first of all, “with us priests”.
“A change in our mindset wherein we perceive the Church as the people of God and not our possession,” he said.
The priest also said that if there is a renewal,” there should also be a change among the laity”.
“A change in our perceptions, in our focus–to focus our attention on those who are set aside in society, especially the poor,” he explained.
The first leg of the BEC Big Day was for the Commonwealth District last Sept. 14 and ended with the Quirino-Tandang Sora District last Sept. 28.
