“When the family is whole, the world is also whole…”
This was one of the main messages of Fr. Joel Jason, head of the Commission for Family and Life of the Archdiocese of Manila, during the first session of the “Family is a Gift” conference on June 16.
“…When the family is damaged, the world is also damaged. And that is why the family is such a gift. When you get the family right the world will be right,” said the priest, who talked to thousands of couples and their families at the SMX Convention Center here.
Jason, who is also parish priest of Our Lady Mirror of Justice parish in Makati City, noted how the Bible exhorts everyone, not just married people, to honor marriage, the foundation of the family. He noted, however, that the opposite is true today, making references to what many believe to be anti-family legislations like the same sex marriage bill.
“Marriage is demeaned, dismissed, it is rejected. It is ridiculed. It is even redefined,” he said.
Jason decried any attempt to fit God’s purpose for the family into any preconceived, man-made design.
‘A second heart’
“If you think understand what the family is you are deceiving yourself… The moment you understand what the family is, your mind will explode. Your heart will not be able to contain it,” he said.
Jason said understanding the family would require a “second heart.”
“The gift of the family is too much for one heart,” he stressed.
Organized by Couples for Christ, “Family is a Gift” conference featured break-out workshops about sexual intimacy, depression in the family, same sex attraction, and teen sexuality, among others.
