NOVALICHES – In celebration of the “Year of the Parish as Communion of Communities”, the Diocese of Novaliches Basic Ecclesial Communities (BEC NOVA) has recently launched a diocesan-wide search for exemplary leaders of Buklurans and Kawans entitled “Gawad H.E.A.R.T. Bukluran Leader”.

The award aims to acknowledge individuals who have the passion and zeal to establish and organize BECs in the parishes or those who have a heart after Novaliches Bishop Antonio R. Tobias, D.D. (H.E.A.R.T.), who is known to be an advocate of empowering people at the grassroots.

“Gawad HEART is the most important because it will give focus to the Bukluran and Kawan leaders who are not usually acknowledged or valued in the parishes,” emphasized BEC Nova lay coordinator Joe Mar Maulion on major programs for 2017.

Church renewal

According to Maulion, Bukluran and Kawan leaders are important not only to the parish and to the diocese but to the Catholic Church as a whole because “they are the ones who actually initiate the renewal of the church”.

Regarded as his legacy in the diocese, Tobias’ regard for the importance of the BECs was seen in the diocese’s structure, since he took over the diocese in 2002, particularly through the creation of strategic pastoral goals that served as the basis for all the plans and programs of the diocese’s commissions and ministries and overall direction in the last 14 years.

BECs, their roles, and functions were also integrated into the Diocese’s Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) Guidelines where they were included in the Executive Committee (ExeCom) or the parish’s decision-making body, enabling the creation of programs benefiting the diocese’s mostly urban poor communities.

Tribute to the bishop

The Gawad H.E.A.R.T. Bukluran Leader (HEARTNova) is actually only one of the three competitions launched by BEC NOVA for the year in partnership with the Diocesan Social Communications and Media Ministry (SocComm Nova). However, HEARTNova is the most esteemed since it is also a tribute to Tobias for his efforts in the diocese now that he has tendered his early retirement and is only awaiting the Vatican’s decision on the matter.

The other two competitions that were simultaneously launched by BEC NOVA are a video-making competition entitled, “Mga Mumunting Kwentong BEC” (MMKB), and a song writing and singing competition entitled, “Gawad Himig Bukluran” (GHB).

The awards are actually the highlight of the recently launched Diocesan Blog Site for the Year of the Parish as a Communion of Communities, otherwise known as Year of the BEC 2017. It will also be part of the awareness campaign of the Diocese’s Social Media accounts to promote the Year of the BEC 2017 to Netizens. CBCPNews
