A new Catholic parish church in the Diocese of Sorsogon was inaugurated on June 26, in a ceremony led by Bishop Arturo Bastes.
The Pope St. John Paul II Parish at Immaculate Conception Subdivision in Bulan town is one 31 parishes of the diocese since it was erected 68 years ago.
St. John Paul II was the pope who appointed Bastes as bishop of Romblon, and later on, the fourth bishop of Sorsogon.
At the same time, Bishop Bastes has installed Fr. Joel Teruel during Mass as its first parish priest.
Fr. Joseph Revidad, the incoming parish priest, Fr. Eduardo Fulay, the Episcopal Vicar of the Vicariate of the Immaculate Conception graced the ceremony, which include the consecration of the church’s bell tower, altar and tabernacle.
It was In 2013 when the Presbyteral Council of the Sorsogon diocese, after a consultation with the lay, the religious and the clergy, expressed its intent to form a new parish in Bulan.
In July 2014, Fr. Teruel was assigned as the first pastor of the then quasi parish, and he began organizing the 21 capillas in 13 barangays.
The priest said the establishment of a new parish is indeed an expression of the growing faith of the parishioners.
