Monsignor Cyril Villareal was elected administrator of Capiz by the archdiocese’s college of consultors.

His election was announced June 28, four days after Capiz’s former archbishop, Cardinal Jose Advincula, was installed archbishop of Manila.

Villareal, who is also the rector of the Colegio de la Purisima Concepcion, will serve as administrator until Pope Francis names a successor to Advincula in the Capiz archdiocese.

The pope appointed Advincula to Manila on March 25. He was installed in his new position on June 24.

Under canon law, the college of consultors must elect an administrator within eight days of receiving notice of vacancy of an episcopal see.

An administrator oversees the day-to-day affairs of the diocese until the installation of the next bishop. He has the same authority as a bishop except in matters that would have long-term effects.

In his role as archdiocesan administrator, Villareal will also attend the meetings of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines.
