Invoking God’s guidance, Bishop Jose Alan Dialogo officially assumed responsibility Saturday as the new shepherd of the Diocese of Sorsogon.

His installation was part of a solemn Mass celebrated at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in the city.

The around an hour service was attended by priests, nuns, local government leaders, and laypeople from in and outside the diocese.

Dialogo, 57, the former director of Manila archdiocese’s home for retired priests, was elected in October to lead the Sorsogon diocese, home to nearly 700,000 Catholics.

Speaking for the first time to his flock, the bishop called for collaborative ministry not just with church officials but also with government officials and the laypeople.

“The episcopacy is not all,” he said. “We need to be one in our journey towards the kingdom of God. Let us always be one, be united.”

Dialogo succeeds Bishop Arturo Bastes, who served the diocese for 17 years.

Also present during the ceremony led by Archbishop Rolando Tria Tirona of Caceres were Papal nuncio Archbishop Gabriele Caccia, and nine other bishops, who are mostly from the Bicol region.

In his homily, Archbishop Tirona stressed that in spiritual life, dialogue with God is never restricted “to God and myself alone”.

“Dialogue with God will ultimately end with the dialogue with the community, and the community dialoguing with God,” Tirona said.

“And that is the role of our dear bishop… to invite you in constant conversation with God through deep prayer, good deeds, forgiveness and above all, as a community, in proclaiming the Good News of Jesus,” he added.

Bishop Dialogo’s installation came two days after his episcopal ordination in the Manila Cathedral on Dec 12.
