A Catholic bishop has welcomed the murder conviction of the three policemen behind the killing of a high school student.
Bishop Pablo Virgilio David of Kalookan said the ruling on Kian delos Santos’ murder shows that the country’s justice system “still works”.
The prelate said he is hoping the the court decision will spur the families of victims of drug-related killings to come out and demand justice.
“This decision will hopefully embolden families of the many other slain victims, who allegedly resisted arrest,” said David.
The bishop also urged witnesses to speak out so that the truth about the spate of killings would be known.
“It is also important that the witnesses will have the courage and the evidences will be brought out,” said David.
The Caloocan Regional Trial Court on Thursday convicted Police Officer 3 Arnel Oares, PO1 Jeremias Pereda and PO1 Jerwin Cruz over the killing of 17-year-old Delos Santos in August 2017.
The three were sentenced to reclusion perpetua, or imprisonment for 20 to 40 years, without eligibility for parole, marking the first conviction of state agents implicated in drug war killing.
