El Shaddai leader Bro. Mike Velarde’s endorsement of presidential aspirant Ferdinand Marcos Jr was a “personal” decision but “very wrong”, the Charismatic group’s spiritual adviser said.
Bishop Teodoro Bacani said that Velarde made the endorsement without consulting him, the bishop of the Parañaque diocese, which covers the El Shaddai’s spiritual center, and even the “elders” of the community.
“Bro. Mike is the founder and servant leader of El Shaddai but he is not the whole El Shaddai Fellowship International Inc., which is much bigger than him,” Bacani said in a video message released Monday.
As a citizen and voter, the prelate said that Velarde has the freedom to endorse any candidate “and same with the members of El Shaddai”.
Velarde on Saturday publicly announced his support for the candidacies of the son of the late dictator and his running mate Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte.
The bishop emeritus of Novaliches also stressed that if there’s someone that the lay Catholic group should endorse, “it’s definitely not Marcos”.
According to him, the refusal of Marcos and his family to apologize over martial law abuses and corruption shows no acceptance of the wrongdoings committed by his father’s administration.
“So (to endorse Marcos) is a mistake,” Bacani said.
