Catholic parents invited to homeschooling confab

There have been homeschooling conferences in the Philippines since 2008, but it was only in 2015 that the Philippine Homeschool Conference was held on an annual basis. HAPI

TAGUIG City – Calling all parents! The Homeschool Association of the Philippine Islands is inviting the public to the Philippine Homeschool Conference (PHC) 2017 on Oct. 7 at Treston International College in Bonifacio Global City from 7 a.m. (start of registration) to 6 p.m.

Inspired by the theme “Educating for the World of Tomorrow”, the conference is open to homeschooling parents, moms and dads interested in homeschooling, and even parents who simply believe in “intentional parenting.”

According to Tina Rodriguez, one of the PHC 2017 organizers, homeschooling is very much in line with Catholic teachings on parenthood.

“Because as a Catholic parent myself, I believe in the Church’s teaching that parents are the first educators of their kids, also [homeschooling] is a great way to transmit our faith because you will be the main influencer of their kids, not the teacher or the classmates or the school bus driver,” she said during an interview.

PHC 2017 speakers include a mix of international and local speakers.

Some of the talks are:

  • Back-to- Basics Parenting in the Technological Age (by Senator Francis Pangilinan)
Unconventional Education: Empowering the Youth for the Future (by Efren Peñaflorida
Jr., 2009 CNN Hero of the Year awardee)
  • The Best Option for Education in the 21st Century: Homeschooling. Know Your Kids. Discover Their Passion. Learning Happens (by Marissa Leinart, a homeschooler for 17 years)

For Jen Mayuga – Cruz, who has been homeschooling her son for 7 years now, the interest in homeschooling came from her desire to inculcate Catholic values in her children.

“You can shape the values of your children because they’re in the home. And me personally my mission has always been … to raise a child whom God is going to be pleased with,” said Cruz, who will also be giving one of the PHC 2017 talks.
