How communities can join ‘Red Wednesday’ campaign
MANILA— The Catholic Bishop’s Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), in partnership with Pontifical Foundation Aid to the Church in Need (ACN), has requested all cathedrals, minor basilicas and shrines to be illuminated in red this November 22 as an expression of solidarity with Christian communities that are facing oppression and persecution. Red symbolizes the blood of the modern-day martyrs that was offered as a powerful testimony of love and devotion to the Christian faith.
The initiative was started by the United Kingdom’s ACN office in 2016. During last year’s events, the Westminster Palace, Abbey, and Cathedral, as well as other Anglican and Jewish places of worship were floodlit in what was a very successful public awareness campaign.
But the Red Wednesday campaign is not just about lighting landmarks in red. Small communities such as schools, parishes and religious organizations may participate in the Red Wednesday campaign through myriads of ways.
For individuals and small groups, the most important gesture is wearing red this November 22. ACN encourages everyone to take pictures and post these on social media networks and match it with a short caption, prayer or message to support persecuted Christians.
For schools, parishes and religious organizations, different educational programs may be held including allotting class time for CVE and/or Theology classes to discuss the issue of religious persecution, holding academic conferences and education sessions that will tackle religious freedom, celebrating a special parish or campus-wide community Mass, holding prayer campaigns, exhibits and other awareness activities and conceptualizing other appropriate activities in line with the objectives of Red Wednesday.
ACN’s UK office has also made available several resources which schools and organizations may use including modules, lesson plans and templates for public assemblies. These may be downloaded
ACN Philippines welcomes all suggestions and encourages the support and participation of everyone as we prepare for Red Wednesday this November.
