ROME— An Indonesian Catholic bishop has bowed out of accepting the honor of being elevated to cardinal in the upcoming consistory, the Vatican announced Tuesday.
Matteo Bruni, Director of the Holy See Press Office, explained that Bishop Paskalis Bruno Syukur’s decision stemmed from his desire to continue growing in his priestly vocation.
He said the bishop of Bogor, located around 60 kilometers south of the national capital of Jakarta, expressed his wish to continue his personal growth “in service to the Church and the people of God.”
Syukur, 62, was among the 21 new cardinals from around the world announced by the pope on October 6.
As a result of his decision, Vatican News reported the number of cardinals to receive the red that from the pope on Dec. 7 will be reduced to 20.
Ordained priest for the Order of Friars Minor in 1991, Syukur has held several pastoral and leadership roles throughout his ministry.
After his licentiate studies in Spirituality at the Antonianum in Rome in 1996, he became a Novice Master in Depok from 1996 to 2001.
He was also a Guardian of the Franciscan community in Depok and a member of the Provincial Council between 1998 and 2001.
From 2001 to 2009, he served as Provincial Minister of the Order in Indonesia, and in 2009, he was appointed General Definitor for Asia and Oceania in Rome.
In 2013, Pope Francis appointed him bishop of the Diocese of Bogor.
