While public Masses in Metro Manila are restricted, churches in the Diocese of Kalookan will remain open to serve as Covid-19 inoculation centers.

Fr. Rene Richard Bernardo of the diocese’s clergy health care and welfare office said all parish churches in the cities of Caloocan, Malabon and Navotas will be used as vaccination sites.

“All churches, as directed by Bishop (Pablo Virgilio) David to our priests, will be opened,” Bernardo said over Radio Veritas on Thursday.

“Our churches are being considered as vaccination sites even as many are already participating in the parish vaccination programs,” he said.

The diocese, the priest added, has also offered other church facilities for related activities.

“In whatever aspect we can help, we will help and we are ready to help in order to expedite the process and save more lives,” Bernardo said.

Metro Manila will be placed under the strictest enhanced community quarantine status on Aug. 6 to 20 as a preemptive response to the highly transmissible Delta variant threat.

Under ECQ, public religious gatherings are among the activities that are prohibited.

The government, however, assured that vaccination will remain unhampered during the ECQ period.

The diocese reminded the public not to let their guard down and adhere to minimum public health standards and other safety protocols.

“We need to do our part. Let us get vaccinated, wear face mask and face shield, and practice proper handwashing,” Bernardo said.
