Marcos family must return wealth without condition – priest
MANILA— A Catholic priest, who was jailed and tortured during martial law, said the offer of the Marcos family to return a part of their wealth must come with no strings attached.
Redemptorist Fr. Amado Picardal said the offer is an admission of guilt that the Marcos family amassed money and property illegally.
“It’s a clear admission that they stashed billions, which belongs to the Filipino people. They should return all that they looted from us without precondition,” Picardal said.
The priest said to show the sincerity of the Marcos family, returning a portion of the wealth should be without any condition.
“That would be an expression of remorse for what happened under Martial Law,” he said.
President Rodrigo Duterte earlier said the Marcoses offered to return a portion of the wealth, including a few gold bars.
Picardal, however, refused to speculate if there is a secret deal between the Duterte administration and the Marcos family.
“I don’t want to speculate. They might want to keep a percentage (of the wealth). After all, they supported Duterte’s candidacy financially,” he added.
The President had admitted that he is indebted to Ilocos Norte Gov. Imee Marcos, who was among his campaign donors. CBCPNews
