Retired Bishop Patricio Alo of the southern Philippine diocese of Mati has died on Tuesday at the age of 81.
The prelate passed away at around 4:35 p.m., according to a brief announcement by his successor, Bishop Abel Apigo.
“Please pray for the repose of his soul,” Apigo said.
A priest for 57 years, Bishop Alo entered the episcopacy when he was named Auxiliary Bishop of Davao in 1981.
In 1984, he was appointed the first bishop of the newly erected Mati diocese.
In the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, he served as chairman of the Commission on Health Care.
Bishop Alo resigned before he reached the church’s mandatory age retirement age of 75 due to health reasons in 2014.
