Retired Bishop Manuel Sobreviñas of Imus passed away Saturday at the age of 96, making him the oldest Catholic bishop in the Philippines.

The bishop died at the Cardinal Santos Medical Center in San Juan City at 12:45 p.m., his diocese’s chancery office said.

“Please include him in all your Mass intentions,” it said.

Born on Dinalupihan town in Bataan province, Sobreviñas was ordained priest for the Archdiocese of Manila in 1951.

In 1979, he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Manila, a post he served for 14 years.

Within the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, he chaired the Commission on Catechesis and Catholic Education from 1991 to 1993.

From Manila, Sobreviñas was appointed as the third bishop of Imus in 1993. He retired in October 2001 at the age of 77.

With the prelate’s death, retired Bishop Jose Sorra of Legazpi, age 91, is now the oldest living Filipino bishop, according to the website Catholic Hierarchy.
