United with his countrymen’s growing concern for their native land, a Filipino priest based in Spain called on Pinoys abroad to respond to the Philippine bishops’ invitation to participate in days of fasting, prayer and almsgiving.

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) issued on July 9 pastoral exhortation titled “Rejoice and be glad,” calling on the faithful to observe a day of prayer and penance on July 16, the feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, followed by three days of fasting, prayer and almsgiving, from July 17 to 19.

The bishops called on the faithful to pray, “invoking God’s mercy and justice on those who have blasphemed God’s Holy Name, those who slander and bear false witness, and those who commit murder or justify murder as a means for fighting criminality in our country.”

A ‘must read’

“The CBCP’s pastoral exhortation is a ‘must read’ for all Filipino Catholics,” stressed Fr. Rolando Arjonillo, a priest assigned in Seville, Spain, a day after the pastoral exhortation was released to the public in Manila.

The priest, as the administrator of the Catholics Striving for Holiness website and Facebook page, launched a worldwide appeal through social media for Filipinos abroad to “pray not only for the resolution of the various crises affecting the Philippines but also for a ‘change of heart’ of fellow Christians who see nothing wrong about the killings, who just laugh when our God is blasphemed, and who take part in passing on fake news”.

“We, Filipinos from all over the world, should read and unite in prayer for our Motherland,” stressed the priest.

“May all Catholics pray to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel for the Philippines during these ‘troubled’ times to ask Holy Mary’s powerful maternal intercession on our country’s behalf,” he added.

Powerful prayer to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel

For this, the priest shared a prayer to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel – a prayer never known to fail – prayed as part of a novena or in any time of need:

“O most beautiful Flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in this my necessity. O Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein that you are my Mother.

“O Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart, to succor me in this my necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. O show me herein that you are my Mother.

“O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us that have recourse to thee. (3 times)

“Sweet Mother, I place this cause in your hands. (3 times)

“We invoke God’s mercy and justice on those who have blasphemed God’s Holy Name, those who slander and bear false witness, and those who commit murder or justify murder as a means for fighting criminality in our country, the Philippines. Amen.”
