The quarrel inside a church between siblings and political rivals Junjun and Abigail Binay should be an “eye opener” to the public, a poll watchdog said.
The Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) referred to the altercation as “unfortunate” in an election forum that was held out of a good intention.
“The unfortunate Makati incident can also be an eye opener for voters, as well as candidates,” said PPCRV chairperson emeritus Henrietta de Villa.
The sibling rivalry between the Makati mayoralty candidates escalated on Saturday, following a confrontation inside the San Ildefonso Parish Church.
De Villa said holding a candidates’ forum with peace covenant signing has always been part of PPCRV’s voters’ education initiative.
She clarified that it was not a debate but an event where bets get to answer prepared questions on current local and national issues.
Nevertheless, De Villa said that the incident can also serve as a learning experience for PPCRV organizers “to control unexpected outbursts”.
