A Catholic prelate has condemned the shooting of the mayor of Infanta town in Quezon province on Sunday.

Bishop Bernardino Cortez of the Infanta prelature called on the faithful to pray for Mayor Filipina Grace America and for justice to prevail.

“May justice prevail in this wicked crime,” Cortez said.

“Conflicts and indifference can never be resolved by violence. Instead, will create division amongst the people,” he said.

America, 50, was on her way home from church when her vehicle was ambushed before noon by still identified gunmen.

The local chief executive sustained gunshot wounds and was rushed to a hospital in Manila.

America is a known opponent of the controversial Kaliwa Dam project, which is also opposed by the Infanta prelature.

She is again running for mayor of Infanta in the May 9 elections.
