When these seminarians go home for vacation later this month, they will bring with them unusual belongings: tree seedlings.
These ‘jubilee trees’ will be planted in various parts of Mindanao, Bohol and Maasin where the seminarians of St. John Vianney Theological Seminary come from.
Fr. Reynaldo Raluto, SJVTS’ Academic Dean, said the planting of trees is part of the seminary’s “500 Trees for the 500 Years of Christianity in the Philippines” initiative.
“This is the aim of SJVTS to mark this important year in the history of the Philippine Church,” Raluto said.
Archbishop Jose Cabantan of Cagayan de Oro, his predecessor Archbishop Emeritus Antonio Ledesma, bishops Antonieto Cabajog of Surigao, Cosme Damian Almedilla of Butuan, Raul Dael of Tandag, and Malaybalay diocesan administrator Msgr. Noel Pedregosa planted the first six of the 500 new trees in the seminary compound on May 12.
The priest said the remaining 494 trees will be planted in their seminarians’ home places.
“They will bring home from the seminary seedlings properly marked as ‘Vianney Jubilee Trees’ and plant them in their home or parish lots,” Raluto said.
“Each of the seedlings the seminarians will plant will be counted as part of the 500 jubilee trees,” he added.
The project is one of the seminary’s green initiatives, including its “community pan-tree” in response to Pope Francis’ challenge “to care for our common home”.
SJVTS’ Integral Ecological Concerns Ministry, which is also under the supervision of Fr. Raluto, coordinate’s the seminary’s ecology-related activities.
