MANILA— A Catholic priest had a strong message for the Commission on Appointments (CA) after it rejected the appointment of Social Welfare Secretary Judy Taguiwalo to the Cabinet.
Fr. Edwin Gariguez of the National Secretariat for Social Action (Nassa), said he sees no reason why Taguiwalo should not be confirmed as head of the Department of Social Welfare and Development.
“The CA should be ashamed of itself for lacking good judgement in appointing the right and competent people in the government,” he said.
Gariguez believes that Taguiwalo has the needed credential, integrity, and track record to hold the post.
The DSWD chief is the third Cabinet appointee of President Rodrigo Duterte who failed to hurdle the congressional appointments body.
In May, the Church’s social action arm and some bishops also expressed dismay when the CA rejected the ad interim appointment of Environment Secretary Gina Lopez.
Gariguez said it’s also disappointing for him that the members of the CA gave no clear reason why Taguiwalo should not be appointed as DSWD chief.
“The CA must be clear on what basis they ground their selection. It should not be based on political expediency and interest,” he added.
The priest also said they are worried about the impact of Taguiwalo’s exit from the DSWD on the upcoming Marawi recovery and rehabilitation efforts.
“Marawi emergency response might be negatively affected if we do not have a good and committed Secretary at the helm of the DSWD,” he lamented. CBCPNews
