100-foot Statue of the Divine Mercy

MARILAO, Bulacan– The world’s tallest statue of the Divine Mercy was blessed and inaugurated here on Thursday.

The town is a popular destination for Catholic pilgrims and devotees who come to pray at the National Shrine of the Divine Mercy.

The 100-feet tall monument stands atop a four-storey multipurpose building at the shrine’s compound, located some 24 kilometers north of Manila.

The ceremony was led by Nigerian Bishop Martin Uzoukwu and Malolos Bishop Jose Oliveros after a Mass attended by local devotees and the delegates of the 4th World Apostolic Congress of Mercy (WACOM4).

Fr. Prospero Tenorio, the shrine’s director, said they have allotted Php93 million for the project and have spent Php43 million so far. The funds, he added, had been accumulated from donations.

Started only last year, the project is yet to be completed and was conceived for the “devotees to feel God’s mercy by reminding them to live the spirituality of the Divine Mercy.”

“It’s what we call as the ‘ABC’. Ask for God’s mercy, be merciful and completely trust in the mercy of God,” said Tenorio, who is also secretary general of WACOM-Asia.

The inauguration was one of the highlights of the fourth day of the “pilgrimage of mercy” attended by more than 5,000 local and international delegates.

Tenorio also said the statue aims to perpetuate the memory of the global Church event that was held in Asia for the first time.

WACOM is a gathering of Divine Mercy devotees and promoters, among whom are bishops, priests, religious brothers and sisters, and laity from the around the world. CBCPNews
