Dr. Giovanna Fontanilla, the long-time public affairs head of the University of Santo Tomas (UST) in Manila, passed away on Sunday.

The Varsitarian, UST’s official student publication, reported that Fontanilla died following cardiac arrest.

She was 62.

The UST said it is “deeply saddened” by the death of “one of our seasoned administrators”.

Combined with her teaching stint in the College of Education prior to being an administrator, Fontanilla served UST for a total of 41 years.

“For three decades, Dr. Fontanilla was UST’s face and voice to the general public and was one of the UST’s best ambassadors,” the institution said.

“We join her family in these trying times and express our unending gratitude to her for her selfless service to the Thomasian family,” it added.

In 1990, Fontanilla became director of the UST’s Public and Alumni Affairs Office. She was named head of public affairs in 2006 after the alumni relations office was separated from PAAO.
