Pope names new bishop of San Fernando in La Union

A priest from the Diocese of Iba in Zambales has been named as new bishop of San Fernando in La Union.

Pope Francis has appointed Fr. Daniel Presto as the 6th bishop of San Fernando.

He will replace Rodolfo Beltran, who headed the diocese for around four years until his death in last year.

Upon his appointment, Presto has been serving as the administrator in Iba after Florentino Lavarias was named as archbishop of San Fernando in Pampanga in 2014.

Since 2012, he has been based in San Antonio town as parish priest, a member of the presbyteral council and various diocesan commissions.

The bishop-elect was born in Mangaldan, Pangasinan on April 7, 1963.

After high school, he attended courses in philosophy and theology at the San Carlos Seminary in Makati City.

At 27, he was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Iba in 1990.

Other posts he held include as vicar of the Saint Rita parish in Olongapo City and the Saint Michael parish in Santa Cruz, Zambales.

Between 1993 and 2005, he was president of the Columban Center of Olongapo City.

Presto also holds a master’s degree in education from the De La Salle University of Manila.

From 2005 to 2012, he was vicar forane of the Saint Joseph Vicariate, director of the Saint Augustine School of Iba, and president of the Magsaysay Memorial College of San Narciso.
