Bishop Moises Cuevas will formally take helm of the Apostolic Vicariate of Calapan on September 6.

The mission territory will be installing its fourth bishop in a ceremony to be presided over by papal nuncio Archbishop Charles Brown.

Several bishops, priests, consecrated persons, and laypeople are expected to pack the Sto. Niño Cathedral for the installation Mass.

Cuevas, who has been serving as the auxiliary bishop of Zamboanga, will succeed 79-year-old Bishop Warlito Cajandig, who held the post for 33 years.

Pope Francis on June 29 appointed Cuevas, 49, as the new shepherd of Calapan that covers Oriental Mindoro province, with 40 parishes and mission stations that serve the indigenous Mangyan communities.

Born in Batangas City, he was ordained a priest for Zamboanga in 2000. He was appointed auxiliary bishop in March 2020.

In August 2021, Cuevas was appointed apostolic administrator “sede plena” of the archdiocese.

He will cease his term as the administrator after the installation of Bishop Julius Tonel of Ipil as the new Zamboanga archbishop on August 22.
